What is Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive?

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC®® all-wheel drive delivers superior performance in all weather conditions, whether you’re moving down the freeway on a hot summer day or you’re making your way to work in the midst of a winter snowstorm. 4MATIC®® improves upon traditional all-wheel drive systems in order to offer the following advantages:

  • Improved traction during rain, sleet, snow, and other forms of inclement weather
  • Constant or adjustable power distribution, so your torque can reach the wheels with the best grip
  • Controlled power delivery, which preserves your fuel economy without compromising performance

How Does Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC®® All-Wheel Drive Work?

Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC®® all-wheel drive deserves to be experienced in person, but you may not understand how it works unless you get familiar with the system before you head out on the roads of Long Island or Roslyn. Here’s what you should know:

  • You’ll be able to choose between 4MATIC®® Variable All-Wheel Drive and 4MATIC®® Permanent All-Wheel Drive. The former can switch between pure front-wheel drive and 50:50 front-rear split power distribution. The latter delivers a constant torque output to all four wheels.
  • Both 4MATIC®® all-wheel drive systems deliver power to the front axle and use a limited-slip differential in order to provide power to the rear.
  • 4MATIC®® AWD also utilizes the 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS). This technology immediately detects excess wheel spin, then brakes to stop the spinning wheel while directing all remaining power toward the wheels with the best grip.

If you choose a model from the Mercedes-Benz AMG® lineup, you may be able to access three additional 4MATIC® AWD configurations. These systems make even more significant contributions to your performance by employing multi-disc clutches, electro-hydraulic controls, and more.
