What to Do After a Car Accident: Checklist

Minor Accidents

If you’re involved in a minor car accident in Long Island, here is a checklist of what to do next:

  1. Check with everyone in the car, along with any pets, to see if anyone needs immediate medical attention. If so, call 911 for an ambulance right away and follow the instructions for a major car accident below.
  2. Try to pull your vehicle over to a safe spot on the side of the road. Be careful not to go far from where the accident happened, but try to get out of the way of other traffic.
  3. Call the police. It doesn’t matter what the other driver says or who caused the accident, always call the police! You will undoubtedly need to have an official report of the collision, and your insurance company will require it.
  4. Exchange your contact information with the other driver. Exchange contact information, such as phone numbers, email addresses, and the insurance policy information of everyone involved. Take a photo of the other driver’s license, insurance card, and license plate. Ask around for any witnesses to the auto accident and ask for their contact information.
  5. Check your Mercedes-Benz for damage. Take some detailed photos of any damage to your car and any of the other vehicle(s) involved. Also, take a picture of the scene of the accident.
  6. Call your insurance company immediately. The sooner you report the accident, the sooner the car accident insurance claim begins.

Major Accidents

If the collision caused any severe injuries or fatalities, it is a major accident, and the steps to take are different:

  • Call 911 ASAP. If anyone is seriously injured and needs medical attention, dial 911 immediately! If you need immediate medical attention and can’t document important information yourself, the police will likely help. Still, make sure you follow up with the police as soon as you can to ensure you have all the information needed.
  • Contact your insurance carrier. It’s essential to call your insurance provider, even if someone else originally initiated the claim on your behalf.
  • Follow up with your doctor. If you’re in any pain from the accident, continue to work with your Plainview physician until you recover.

How to File a Car Accident Insurance Claim

So, how do you file a car insurance claim? The process is relatively simple. When you file a car accident insurance claim with your insurance company, you’ll need to give them specific information, such as:

  • Your car insurance policy number
  • An explanation of how the accident happened
  • The time, date, and location of the auto collision
  • Contact information of the other parties involved
  • The name of the police department and officers that helped you at the scene and the police report number (if you have one)

Your auto insurance provider will arrange to have your car inspected by an insurance adjuster and repair shop who will estimate the cost of your auto repairs, amount of insurance coverage, and more.
