Mercedes-Benz History

Karl Benz invented the first gas-powered automobile — the Benz Patent Motorwagen — in the late 1800s. This vehicle was then marketed to the public by Daimler Motors Corporation in 1901. 25 years later, Mercedes-Benz became the brand and automaker that’s now known worldwide. This step in Mercedes-Benz history took place in 1926, when Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler merged their companies into a new company called “Daimler-Benz.” Since then, Mercedes-Benz has gone on to create ground-breaking technology and some of the most refined and powerful vehicles to hit the roads in Woodbury and beyond.

With such innovative Mercedes-Benz tech, it’s no wonder that the Mercedes-Benz history includes numerous awards:

• World Car Awards: In 2015, Mercedes-Benz accomplished something no other manufacturer has been able to match when three of their vehicles — the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz-AMG® GT, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe — brought home wins at the World Car Awards. 
• High Mileage Award: Mercedes-Benz are built to last, with many earning the High Mileage Award. In fact, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE recently passed the 1 million mile mark!
• Brand Image Award: Most Refined Brand: In 2019, Kelley Blue Book named Mercedes-Benz the Best Luxury Brand. 
• Racing Car of the Year: Mercedes-Benz history includes roots in racing, which are evident in their AMG® lineup. The Mercedes Formula 1 team has carried this legacy with a six-year streak of being named the Racing Car of the Year by Autosports Awards.
